M-S to play for Sectional title

The winning streak for the Mahomet-Seymour eighth-grade girls’ basketball team reached 20 games on Thursday (Dec. 20) as the Bulldogs upended Urbana, 34-9, in the championship game of the IESA Class 4A regional in the M-S gymnasium.
M-S led 22-4 at halftime against an opponent it had defeated by 27 points in the regular season.
Lily Bosworth posted a team-high 12 points for the Bulldogs. Erin Dallas and Ava Yeakel each contributed nine points.
M-S (23-1) returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 8) at home against Effingham (18-2) in the sectional finals. The winner will reserve a berth at state.
The Mahomet-Seymour seventh-grade team finished one win and six points shy of qualifying for the IESA Class 4A state tournament.
In the sectional finals at Taylorville, M-S dropped a 26-20 decision to the host school on Wednesday (Dec. 1).
Hannah Martin scored a team-high eight points and Courtney Fonte followed with six points.
The Bulldogs held a 20-15 fourth-quarter lead before the host Tornadoes scored the game’s final 11 points.
M-S ends its season with a 22-4 record. Taylorville is 25-2 and will play Morton for the Class 4A state championship on Thursday (Dec. 9).
During the course of the season, six M-S athletes led, or shared, the team-lead in scoring.
Fonte was the leader in 13 games, Martin was tops in eight games, Breckyn Hess led in six games, Addison Schultz set the pace in two games. Leading in one game apiece were Olivia Cox and Payson Steers.
Martin had the top individual game, with 18 points against Mount Zion. Fonte’s top game was 14 points against Normal Chiddix.
