M-S Tennis upsets Mount Zion

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ tennis team opened its season – and the recently finished Middletown Courts at the corner of Main and Division streets – with a 5-4 upset win over Mount Zion on Thursday (Aug. 17).
After splitting the six singles matches, M-S won two of three doubles matches to secure the victory over its Apollo Conference rival.
At No. 2 doubles, Holland Martin and Adella Bird teamed up for a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
At No. 3 doubles, the pairing of Ashley Shoaf and Lindsay Gowler prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (6).
The Bulldogs’ No. 1 doubles combination dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 1-6, 10-5 decision. Savannah Amatyleon and Emily Young formed the No. 1 duo.
In singles, Martin (6-0, 6-1 at No. 3) and Young (6-2, 6-3 at No. 4) were straight-set winners. Emmie Floress (at No. 6) rallied for a win. She was triumphant 6-7 (2), 7-5, 11-9.
The rest of M-S’ singles lineup included Amatyleon (No. 1), Bird (No. 2) and Claire Johnson (No. 5).
The Bulldogs (1-0) return to action on Tuesday (Aug. 22) at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.
