M-S teams start week with wins, Soccer grabs Apollo Conference Championship

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ soccer, softball and baseball teams all started the week off with wins.

Girls’ soccer

Brooke Benson scored the first M-S goal and assisted on the second Tuesday as the Bulldogs (16-2) extended their winning streak to 10 and clinched the outright Apollo Conference championship in their first year in the league.

M-S shut out visiting Mattoon 6-0 to improve to 8-0 in Apollo Conference matches.

Area scoring leader Meredith Johnson-Monfort (33 goals) had two goals and two assists.

Johnson-Monfort scored twice in the opening half as the Bulldogs built a 4-0 lead at the break.

The first-half scored ended when Michaela Schoolcraft converted a penalty kick.

Second-half goals were scored by Haley Lester and Mackenzie Moore.

Goalkeeper Sarah Hohenstein collected two saves in her 12th shutout of the season.

After 18 matches, the Bulldogs have outscored the opposition 81-10.

In junior varsity action, the Bulldogs (14-0-2) also won by a 6-0 score.

Softball

The Bulldogs (10-8) scored 10 first-inning runs and held on to defeat visiting Tri-Valley 14-11 on Wednesday.

Layne Acree and Ashley Campbell each had three hits for M-S. Teammate Kameryn Brotherton drove in three runs.

Madi Scott had two hits, including her second home run of the season.

Other Bulldogs with two hits were Brotherton, Carlee Scott, Ashley Wheeler, Aubrie Shore and Julia McNaught.

Shore pitched six innings and earned the win. She allowed 11 hits, walked five and struck out seven.

Wheeler pitched the final inning, giving up three hits and no runs.

Through 18 games, M-S’ offense is scoring an average of more than nine runs per contest.

Baseball

Austin Biehl’s fifth-inning double drove in Corbin Neef with the game’s only run and Mahomet-Seymour pitchers Tanner Kirts and Kyle Mumm made it hold up in a three-hit shutout over Centennial on Monday in Champaign.

Kirts (4-1) was involved with his second shutout and the team’s fifth this spring. He allowed two hits in five innings, walking two and striking out four.

Mumm pitched the final two innings, yielding one hit. He walked one and struck out one.

Biehl’s double was the game’s only extra-base hit.

The Bulldogs (9-5) were also limited to three hits. The others were by Kirts and Jordan Veldman.

Neither team committed an error.
