Three Mahomet-Seymour golfers were among the 10 individuals who advanced to sectionals following Wednesday’s Class 1A girls’ regional golf tournament at Brookhill Golf Course, in Rantoul.
Sarah Amjad (95) placed 24th overall, Emma Yates (96) was 27th and Emma Amjad (98) ended in 30th place.
Their seasons will continue next week in another 18-hole event
As a team, M-S was fourth out of seven schools in the field.
Meet champion St. Thomas More had a score of 336. Runner-up Tri-Valley (375) and third-place Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (376) also qualified teams for the Auburn Sectional, which will take place on Monday.
M-S’ score was a season-best 398.
Boys’ golf
Junior Brandon Collins will be the lone M-S representative at sectionals after firing an 87 in Tuesday’s Class 2A regional tournament at Willow Pond Golf Course, in Rantoul.
Collins secured the final qualifying spot for the Lincoln Sectional, which will be held on Monday.
As a team, M-S was seventh in the nine-school field. The top three teams advanced to the sectional as well as the top 10 individuals not on advancing teams.
The meet champion was Bloomington Central Catholic (316). M-S’ composite was 358.
Other M-S scorers at regional were Alek Strube (88), who missed advancing by one stroke, Sawyer Daebelliehn (90), Grant Harvey (93), Sam Mitchaner (97) and C.J. Shoaf (103).
Girls’ swimming
Freshman Olivia McMurry won an individual race and was part of a first-place relay on Monday for the Bulldogs, who placed second in a three-team meet at Urbana.
McMurry won the 100-yard freestyle by 5.38 seconds. Her winning time was 1 minute, 8.28 seconds.
She also swam the leadoff leg on the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay. She was joined by Rebekah Gonzalez, Kathryn Raver and Natalie Heaton. The foursome was timed in 4:45.09 and won by 19.21 seconds.
McMurry also had a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley.
Other M-S swimmers with second-place finishes individually were Heaton in the 100 backstroke and Olivia Ross in the 100 breaststroke.
Grace Larson posted two third-place finishes, in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
Heaton was third in the 200 freestyle and Gonzalez was third in the 50 freestyle.
In the 200 IM, Katya Sakhartov placed third.
Diver Carly Raver was fourth and teammate Lydia Schable was fourth in the 100 freestyle.
M-S registered second-place finishes in both the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle relay races.
Gonzalez and Ross were on both of those relays. Heaton and McMurry were the other participants on the medley unit while Schable and Kathryn Raver swam legs on the 200 free relay.
In the team chase, Danville was victorious with 127 points. M-S had 110 points and Urbana ended with 67 points.
Girls’ cross-country
M-S had the individual and team champions in Tuesday’s Normal University High Invitational at Maxwell Park.
Freshman Elizabeth Sims was the meet champion, touring the 3-mile course in 18 minutes 20 seconds, giving her a two-second margin of victory.
Four other Bulldogs were among the top 10 finishers.
Senior Brisa McGrath was fourth in 18:51.
Olivia Bunting was sixth in 19:04.
Freshmen Delaney King (19:43) and Grace Lietz (19:49) were eighth and ninth, respectively.
In all, there were 98 finishers.
Other Bulldog competitors placing among the team’s top seven were Klein Powell (11th in 19:59) and Madi Balbach (12th in 20:07).
Eight schools fielded full teams.
M-S’ winning score was 28 points. Runner-up Normal U-High had 39 points.
Volleyball
The Bulldogs (14-9) won their fourth match in a row on Tuesday, dispatching visiting Mount Zion 25-22, 25-21.
The offense was anchored by Ainsley Ranstead (12 kills) and Savannah Matthews (nine kills) with setter Kayin Garner handing out 25 assists.
Matthews (13 digs) and Josie Hess (nine digs) were the defensive leaders.
Garner and Lauren Minick each served one ace.
The Bulldogs return to action tonight at Taylorville.
M-S is 7-2 in Apollo Conference matches.
Boys’ soccer
For the second time this season, M-S and Mattoon battled to a 3-3 draw. Tuesday’s match was played in Mattoon.
M-S is 11-2-5 overall and 5-0-3 in Apollo Conference matches.
Mattoon is 15-1-3 overall.
The Bulldogs salvaged a tie in the final two minutes when Austin Carr converted a penalty kick to cap a comeback from a 3-1 deficit.
Ethan Mansfield scored the first M-S goal, with an assist from Kadyn Jones.
Joah Moore hit a second-half goal, assisted by Mansfield, before Carr booted his team-leading 17th goal.
M-S returns to action tonight at Mount Zion.
