M-S Softball Drops Doubleheader Despite Power Hitting from Granadino and Hartman

Kalista Granadino and Brooke Hartman both hammered two extra-base hits in the first game of an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday (April 18) at Charleston, but the Bulldogs lost both games.

The first game ended in heartbreaking fashion for M-S, 7-6, in eight innings with the walk-off winning run scoring with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Hartman pounded a double and a home run in the opener and drove in three runs. Granadino swatted two doubles. Brooklyn Dyer also had two hits in the first game and knocked in a run.

Rio Casillas, Madeleine Cortez and Madelyn Logsdon also had hits in the first game.

Ava Henderson took the first-game loss. She pitched 7 2/3 innings and yielded nine hits. She struck out one hitter.

Producing hits in both games for the Bulldogs were Cortez, Dyer, Granadino, Hartman and Logsdon.

Dyer drove in Peyton Shelmadine for the lone M-S run in the nightcap, an 8-1 loss. Shelmadine scored twice in the first game.

Cortez and Logsdon both socked two hits in the second game, one of which was a double for each player. Cortez also stole a base. Presley Cox also contributed two second-game hits.

Katherine Severns worked all six innings of the nightcap. She scattered nine hits, walked no one and fanned two batters.

M-S (4-12) returns to action on Tuesday (April 23) at home against Normal Community.
