Mahomet-Seymour posted its biggest soccer win of the season on Tuesday, rallying from a two-goal halftime deficit on the road to defeat Mattoon 7-4. The Green Wave ended the M-S season the past three years in regional championship matches.
Mattoon led 3-1 at intermission.
“Kadyn Jones (senior) said to the boys at half how he was tired of losing to this team,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “He came out and was the best player on the field.
“After playing a touch more central in the first half, he began to play wide and get into more one-on-ones with his defender. He would disingenuously slow his pace only to sprint by the defender with the wall. He was instrumental in the comeback as he beat his man and made the keeper commit to him over and over again. While Kadyn was finding success, his partners would attack the front of the goal to place it in.”
Jake Janda scored three goals and Jones added three assists to lead M-S.
Colten Brunner scored twice for the Bulldogs. Jones and Eli Warren both netted one goal.
Brunner, Janda, Warren and Logan Woodward finished with one assist apiece for the Bulldogs.
M-S scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to create a 3-3 deadlock.
“The Dogs’ focus was on playing short tight passes to bypass the defense rather than playing it longer going into the second half,” Davis said.
The team’s fourth straight win also raised the M-S record in Apollo Conference matches to 4-0.
Overall, the Bulldogs are 7-2-1 entering Saturday’s match at Bloomington.
In Tuesday’s JV match, the unbeaten Bulldogs (6-0) topped Mattoon 4-2.
