Nolan Wheeler netted two goals and Carson Reed distributed two assists on Tuesday (Aug. 30) as the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ soccer team opened Apollo Conference play at home with a 5-0 shutout victory over Mount Zion.
Also scoring for the Bulldogs, who led 3-0 at halftime, were Kai Jones, Travis Hoffman and Nick Tjahjadi.
Also providing assists were Jones, Mitchell McAnally and Isaac Warren.
Goalkeeper Zach Beyer collected three saves while registering his fourth shutout in five matches.
“The boys came out a bit flat in the first half,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “They played weak passes and some unmotivated defense. The scoreboard said they played solidly, earning a 3-0 lead.
“However, they got a gentle and soft-spoken reminder at halftime that they were capable of quite a bit more.
“The boys picked it up and played with more intensity the second half and finished with a 5-0 victory.”
M-S (4-1) will return to action on Friday (Sept. 2) at the Urbana Tournament against Dunlap.
In the junior varsity match against Mount Zion, the Bulldogs were triumphant 3-0. Ty Clark scored two goals and Wesley Jones hit one goal. The JV team is 3-0.
