M-S season comes to an end in loss to Decatur MacArthur
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ basketball team didn’t have history on its side during the postseason journey.
The 2022-23 season ended in a virtual repeat of the program’s 2021-22 season.
One year ago, M-S defeated Lincoln in the regional championship game after losing all regular-season games to the Railsplitters, and then was ousted in the sectional semifinals by Decatur MacArthur.
This year, the Bulldogs edged Lincoln in the regional championship game after losing all regular-season games to the Railsplitters.
That victory placed coach Ryan Bosch’s team in a sectional semifinal contest on Tuesday (Feb. 28) against Decatur MacArthur.
For the second time in two years, the M-S season came to an end at the hand of the Generals, 62-37.
Another piece of history was also unavoidable. In a year where numerous squad members have missed games due to illness or injury, two of the team’s top five scorers were sidelined against MacArthur (Wyatt Bohm and Byron Lynch).
Sophomore Trey Peters ended the season as he started it, leading the Bulldogs in scoring. Peters tossed in a game-high 17 points against the Generals. Dayten Eisenmann, who netted three three-pointers, tallied 11 points.
Henry Wagner and Cade Starrick each generated three points. Each hit a three-point field goal.
M-S fell behind, 14-6, after one quarter and 30-18 at halftime.
The Bulldogs end the season with a 14-17 overall record, but finished with wins in six of their final nine games.
MacArthur carries a 29-4 mark into Friday’s sectional title game in its own gym against Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin.
Carter Selk and Jake Waldinger each hauled down four rebounds for M-S. Selk and Luke Dyer had three assists apiece.
For the season, eight squad members led – or shared the team-lead – in scoring.
Jake Waldinger was the leader in eight games, followed by Bohm (seven games), Eisenmann (seven games), Peters (six games), Adam Dyer (three games), Finn Randolph (two games), Luke Dyer (one game) and Lynch (one game).
Bohm (21 points) and Waldinger (21 points) were the only Bulldogs to hit more than 18 points in a game this season.
Top scorers for the season were Bohm (9.2 per-game average), Eisenmann (8.9), Peters (8.8), Waldinger (8.0), Lynch (5.5) and Adam Dyer (5.0).
The team’s three-point leaders were Waldinger (44), Eisenmann (40), Bohm (20), Adam Dyer (17), Randolph (17) and Lynch (12).
Both, Eisenmann and Waldinger all had games were they sank four three-point shots.
The most accurate M-S free throw shooters (minimum of 10 attempts) were Lynch (85.3 percent), Randolph (80 percent), Eisenmann (78.8 percent), Peters (68.1 percent), Bohm (67.6 percent) and Waldinger (65.5 percent).
Bohm (6.5 per-game average), Peters (5.0 per-game average), Eisenmann (3.2 per-game average), Waldinger (2.7 per-game average) and Selk (2.6 per-game average) led the Bulldogs in rebounding.
Bohm produced both of the team’s double-doubles this season and had a high game of 17 rebounds.
The assists leaders were Bohm (84), Randolph (73), Adam Dyer (60) and Selk (52).
