M-S football drops home-opener to Marion

The Jon Adkins Coaching Era at Mahomet-Seymour started with a 34-13 loss on Friday to Marion on the Bulldogs’ Frank Dutton Field.
Marion built a 20-0 lead before M-S scored twice in a span of 3 minutes, 49 seconds in the third quarter.
A first-game loss is the way the season has started for the Bulldogs now for six consecutive years.
Quarterback Braden Finch scored the team’s first touchdown of the 2019 season, on a 5-yard run at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter.
Clay Hubble, who rushed for a team-high 142 yards, reached the end zone on a 10-yard run with 2:46 remaining in the period, cutting the Bulldogs’ deficit to 26-13. Hubble also had another 41 yards on three kick returns.
Carson Thomas made a conversion kick after Finch’s TD. Finch completed 5 of 16 passes for 38 yards. He also rushed for 53 yards.
Zach Travis hauled in three receptions for 27 yards.
Defensively, Colton Morris had six stops and also forced a fumble. Finishing with four tackles apiece were Thomas, Costen Campion and C.J. McKinney.
M-S returns to action on Friday with its Apollo Conference opener at Taylorville (1-0). The kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Taylorville opened its season with a 28-24 win at Mount Vernon.
