M-S boys’ golf win Urbana Kickoff Classic, defeats Tuscola

With two individuals securing top-10 finishes and a third missing that placement by one stroke, the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ golf team opened the season on Monday (Aug. 16) by capturing team honors in the 15-school Urbana Tiger Kickoff Classic at Urbana Country Club.

M-S’ composite team score was 326, which provided the Bulldogs a five-shot victory over runner-up Champaign Central (331). In third place was Mount Zion (333).

Freshman Reis Claybrooke’s 18-hole total was 79 and he ended in a two-way tie for sixth-place individually. Teammate Erik Christianson fired an 81 and snared a share of 10th place with one other competitor.

Zach Courson (82) and Brian Coyne (84) were the other Bulldogs whose scores counted in the team total. Brogan Hennesy (90) and Jaedon Lager (91) were the other M-S participants.

On Tuesday (Aug. 17), M-S opened the home portion of its schedule at Lake of the Woods by topping Tuscola, 168-229.

Claybrooke was the medalist with a 40. Other Bulldog leaders were Courson (41), Carter Selk (43), Jackson White (43), Christianson (44), Coyne (45), Riley Dowers (45) and Jacob Shoudel (45).

The Bulldogs return to action on Monday (Aug. 23) against Blue Ridge in Farmer City.
