M-S Baseball captures Apollo Conference title

One week after clinching at least a tie for the Apollo Conference championship, the Mahomet-Seymour baseball team secured undisputed possession of the title.
M-S swept Mount Zion at home on Saturday (May 14), winning 12-0 and 10-9 thanks to an offense that produced two home runs in each game.
Blake Wolters, who has allowed just two earned runs in nine appearances this spring, tossed his third shutout while improving to 7-0 in the first game.
He allowed three hits, two walks and struck out 11. For the season, he has fanned 85 batters in 43 1/3 innings.
Carter Johnson and Carter Selk – who were a combined 5-for-5 in the first game – hammered homers in the opener. Johnson had four RBI and Selk drove in three runs.
Brayden Smith was the only Bulldog with two hits in each game. He delivered four RBI for the day.
Alex McHale also landed two hits in the first game. Chase Wagers drove in two runs in the first game and Jacob Waldinger scored two runs.
In the second game, Wolters was 3-for-3 with a double and a home run. He knocked in three runs and scored two. Selk also crossed home plate twice.
Braden Houchin also cracked a solo home run in the nightcap.
Sharing the pitching duties were Mateo Casillas (three innings), Johnson (three innings) and Zach Courson, who struck out three batters in his one inning on the mound.
Johnson (3-0) earned the win. He fanned three batters in his stint.
On Thursday (May 12), Houchin pitched six innings of one-hit ball as M-S won its 20th game of the spring, 11-0 at Tri-Valley
Houchin walked no one and fanned eight hitters. Courson pitched a hitless seventh inning and recorded one strikeout.
The pitchers were backed by an errorless defense and an offensive unit that swiped 11 bases, four by Jaedon Lager. Houchin and Casillas each stole two bases.
Houchin was the lone Bulldog with more than one hit. He ended 2-for-4 at the plate. Houchin and McHale each tallied two runs.
Evan Ruzich delivered two RBI.
M-S (22-4) returns to action on Monday (May 16) at home against Normal Community.
