Lietz’s Double Helps Short-Handed Mahomet-Seymour Girls’ Soccer Team to a 2-2 Draw Against Washington
By Fred Kroner
Isabel Lietz scored one goal in each half on Saturday (April 6) as the short-handed Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team recovered from a halftime deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie against Washington at Middletown Field.
Lietz scored the first goal of the match, with an assist from Nadia Biegler. She scored the equalizer on an assist from Ella Walk.
Goalkeeper Maggie Moore recorded a season-high seven saves.
“Maggie Moore is making a play to be recognized as one of the best keepers in the area,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “The Panthers out-chanced the Bulldogs, but Moore was able to keep two high quality chances out of the back of the net.
“One in particular, she was able to follow a cross and slide to the back post deflecting a low hard shot wide. The play kept the Panthers from getting what would have been the game-winner.”
With three key contributors sidelined either by injury or illness, Davis shuffled his lineup, and liked the results.
“Audrey Marshall and Hannah Creel had their first time as center backs on the season and performed well in directing the back line,” Davis said. “Early in the second half, leading scorer on the season, Gwen Cambron (six goals) went down with an ankle injury.
“Moving some pieces around, strikers Ella Walk, Jaycee Fancher, and Cam Nelson were able to create some offense through their defense. By bringing some pressure at the backline and the keeper, the strikers were able to get the keeper to commit to coming out.
“Overall, this was a good result from a banged-up squad, with the tantalizing thought that we will be deeper and improved due to the injuries later in the season when we get healthy.”
In the junior varsity match, the unbeaten Bulldogs remain unscored upon following a 2-0 victory.
Zoey Wallace and Claire Waggoner scored the M-S goals. Kylyn Ross notched an assist and Anna Streicher kept the shutout streak intact with a four-save performance.
M-S (3-2-1) returns to action on Thursday (April 11) at Mattoon.
