Leyhe becomes first Mahomet-Seymour girl to place at state tournament

Mahomet-Seymour senior Isabelle Leyhe became the first girl from M-S to win a match at the IHSA girls’ wrestling state tournament.

On Friday (Feb. 23), Leyhe posted a pin in 1:51 over Marisol Castro, a 21-match winner from Phoenix.

Leyhe was 1-2 at state with her losses to opponents who wound up in fourth- and sixth-place in the 16-team bracket at 120 pounds.

For the year, Leyhe won the highest percentage of her matches (80.8 percent) for the Bulldogs. Her overall record was 21-5.

The other two M-S state competitors were each 0-2 in the event held at Grossinger Motors Arena, in Bloomington.

Sophomore Kalista Granadino lost her state debut at 115 pounds by pin to the wrestler who wound up finishing as the state runner-up.

Granadino wound up with a team-best 23-12 record.

Freshman Jaycee Fancher, at 125 pounds, suffered a loss to the wrestler who ended in third place in her weight class. Fancher’s final record was 20-10.

In all, the Bulldogs had six members on its girls’ wrestling squad.
