LeRoy police seek information on white van associated with littering in LeRoy and Mahomet

LeRoy police are looking for a white van that may be associated with littering in LeRoy and Mahomet earlier this week.

Residents in Mahomet and LeRoy woke to find Ziploc bags with rocks and a note that was headed “White Lives Matter” followed by websites with misinformation about COVID-19.

Mahomet Police Chief Mike Metzler said that his department was notified about the bags around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

“The deliveries appear to be confined to the Lakeview Subdivision,” Metzler said. “A white van, presumably connected to the distribution, was seen in the subdivision.  There was no further identifying information.”

Metzler added that the Mahomet Police Department would not pursue with an investigation.

“There are many circumstances where fliers, pamphlets, campaign materials etc.  are left at people’s homes,” he said. “While we may disagree with the content of the fliers, further follow-up is not warranted.”

The LeRoy Police Department released a photo of the van caught on video along with a statement: “If anyone has any video of these being placed we would like it.    We have several citations for littering we would like to issue.”

Anyone with information about the distribution of the flyers is asked to call 217-962-3310.
