Koerner reaches 100-career goals against Lincoln
By Fred Kroner
Cayla Koerner passed the 100-mark for career goals scored on Tuesday (April 13) and both Koerner and Brea Benson moved up the Mahomet-Seymour career scoring chart during a 9-0 win at Lincoln.
The Bulldogs led 2-0 at intermission.
Koerner notched five goals and two assists, giving her 102 career goals and 60 career assists. Her 162 total points pushed her past Meredith Johnson-Monfort for the all-time M-S lead in points.
Benson contributed two goals and two assists, moving her career totals to 43 goals and 51 assists. Her 94 points shot her past Maddy Wade and into third place on the career scoring list.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for M-S.
“In somewhat difficult conditions, the girls maintained control of the ball in the first half, but were unable to finish consistently against a packed box against the wind,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “The girls adjusted by not forcing the ball forward in the second half.
“The gray clouds were pushed out by the 50 mph gusts, and a pastel sky overlooked the Bulldogs dominating the final half, scoring five times in the first 20 minutes.”
Benson continues to contribute on the offensive end although she has an extended role this spring.
“Brea Benson has been tasked with a slightly more defensive role this season and still has played exceptionally well,” Davis said.
Emma Dallas had a goal and an assist. Grace Lietz registered two assists.
M-S (7-0 overall and 3-0 in Apollo Conference matches) returns to action on Thursday (April 14) at Mattoon with first place in the Apollo at stake.
