Koerner approaches new milestones in as Bulldogs win over Morton
By Fred Kroner
Cayla Koerner had one goal and two assists on Thursday (May 12) as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team earned a 3-1 win at Morton.
Lauren Schnepper booted two goals and Brea Benson contributed one assist.
M-S led, 2-1, at halftime.
“The Bulldogs played well in a matchup up two postseason No. 1 (regional) seeds,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “After a bit of downward dip, M-S returned to equilibrium. They played their best team game of the year with several girls stepping up to fill some shoes due to illness and conflicts.
“While the stats will say it was a usual night for the girls with Koerner, Benson and Schnepper showing up on the stat list, it really was the night of the role player that helped to see the Bulldogs to a victory.
“In another night of debilitating heat, Grace Binkley, Taylor Dietz, Kamryn Frost and Sidney Young all played crucial minutes in the victory. Our midfield of Benson, (Nadia) Biegler and (Brielle) Galvan had one of their strongest and most organized defensive outings.”
Koerner, meanwhile, continues to climb higher on the all-time list of IHSA leaders.
She has 51 goals this season (which is tied for 19th all-time) and 31 assists as a senior (which ranks in a tie for 14th all-time).
Koerner’s 75 career assists also rank 14th. She is just outside the IHSA top 20 for career goals with 128. She needs seven more to move into a tie for 20th.
She has already shattered M-S school marks for season and career goals. The previous marks were held by 2018 graduate Meredith Johnson-Monfort with 43 goals in a season and 117 in her career. Johnson-Monfort also held the previous career record for assists with 44.
Koerner also had a goal in 12 seconds earlier in the season, which ranks in a tie for 12th quickest in IHSA history.
The Bulldogs close the regular season with a 17-2 record. Top-seeded M-S will open postseason play on Wednesday (May 18) against sixth-seeded Lincoln in the Bloomington Class 2A Regional.
Cayla Koerner’s totals in various soccer categories were accomplished in 3 years since Covid took a year out off opportunities for scoring. State totals were acquired in a 4 year opportunity window. Grandma’s look at things like that!
