Klein Powell leads Bulldogs at Dodds Park
Despite running short-handed, as three varsity runners were withheld from the meet, the Bulldogs placed second in a four-team cross-country race on Tuesday (Sept. 22) at Dodds Park, in Champaign.
Meet champion Urbana Uni High had 20 points, followed by M-S (35), Tuscola (94) and Villa Grove/Heritage (101).
M-S had five runners finish among the top 11 in a field of 39 participants.
Junior Klein Powell was the team-leader. She ran the 3-mile course in 20 minutes and 24 seconds to place fourth individually.
The next four Bulldog placers came across the finish line within 48 seconds of one another.
Delaney King was sixth in 21:04. Emily Bednar was ninth in 21:38. Callie Jansen was 10th in 21:44. Grace Lietz was 11th in 21:52.
In all, 12 M-S athletes ran in the varsity race.
Other finishers were Chloe Allen (13th in 22:01), Olivia Bunting (14th in 22:05.6), Elizabeth Sims (15th in 22:05.8), Alyssa Christensen (20th in 22:43), Lauren Bednar (21st in 23:07), Ella Wolters (22nd in 23:24) and CeCe Abramson (25th in 24:46).
In a subsequent open race, Gretchen Scheele was the first of six M-S participants. Her 3-mile time was 24:47.
Other M-S runners were: Hannah Hofbauer (25:59), Emily Bergia (26:04), Meg Turner (26:07). Fiona Taylor (26:18) and Sadie Wilcoxon (28:42).
For the day, Lauren Bednar, Bergia, Turner and Wilcoxon ran personal-best times.
M-S returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 26) at the SJ-O Spartan Classic.
