Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has launched a new initiative to help residents prepare for the upcoming REAL ID enforcement deadline on May 7, 2025. The program includes several key components:

• New Online Portal: A dedicated “Get A REAL ID” portal on www.ilsos.gov allows Illinoisans to determine if they need a REAL ID and find nearby locations or schedule appointments.
• ‘REAL ID Saturdays’: 12 DMV facilities in Chicago and surrounding suburbs will offer exclusive REAL ID services on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., starting March 1 through May 10.
• Extended Hours: Six appointment-only DMV locations will expand their Saturday operations to 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., while nine others will maintain their current 7:30 a.m. – Noon hours.
• Increased Appointments: Nearly 2,500 additional daily appointments have been made available at 44 appointment-only DMVs in Chicago and the suburbs.

Secretary Giannoulias emphasized that not all residents need a REAL ID before May 7. Those with valid U.S. passports, global entry cards, or military identification, as well as individuals under 18, will not require a REAL ID for domestic air travel or to visit certain federal facilities.

The Secretary also noted that REAL IDs are not mandatory for driving or as proof of citizenship, and non-REAL ID licenses will remain valid until their printed expiration date.

For those who do need a REAL ID, the process requires an in-person visit to an Illinois DMV with specific documentation, including proof of identity, Social Security number, residency, and signature.

This initiative aims to address the recent surge in demand for REAL IDs while ensuring that other DMV services remain accessible. Residents are encouraged to use the online portal to determine their needs and plan accordingly before visiting a DMV facility.
