Illinois Labor Market Shows Improvement in December

Illinois experienced a positive shift in its labor market during December, with the unemployment rate decreasing and job numbers rising, according to the latest data from IDES (Illinois Department of Employment Security).

Unemployment Rate Drops

The unemployment rate in Illinois fell to 5.2% in December, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from November’s revised rate of 5.3%. While this represents progress, the state’s unemployment rate remains 1.1 percentage points higher than the national average of 4.1%.

Job Growth Across Sectors

Nonfarm payrolls in Illinois increased by 8,800 jobs in December, with several key industries contributing to the growth:

  • Financial Activities: +2,900 jobs
  • Private Education and Health Services: +2,600 jobs
  • Government: +2,000 jobs

However, some sectors experienced job losses, including Professional and Business Services (-2,100 jobs) and Other Services (-1,000 jobs).

Annual Job Growth

Over the past year, Illinois has added 56,000 nonfarm payroll jobs, representing a 0.9% increase. The sectors with the largest annual growth were:

  • Government: +32,100 jobs
  • Private Education and Health Services: +26,600 jobs
  • Other Services: +9,900 jobs

Conversely, Professional and Business Services (-16,200), Manufacturing (-6,900), and Financial Activities (-4,100) saw the most significant job losses compared to December 2023.

Labor Force and Unemployment Trends

The number of unemployed workers in Illinois decreased by 1.7% in December to 340,400, although this figure remains 11.8% higher than the same time last year. The labor force grew by 0.1% over the month and 1.2% over the year, indicating increased participation in the job market.

Illinois JobLink (IJL), the state’s largest job search engine, continues to play a crucial role in connecting jobseekers with employers. As of the latest data, IJL listed 75,230 available jobs and 65,754 posted resumes.While Illinois has made progress in reducing unemployment and creating jobs, challenges persist. The state’s unemployment rate remains above the national average, and certain industries continue to face declines. However, growth in sectors such as Government, Education, and Health Services indicates ongoing opportunities for jobseekers in the state.
