Illinois motorists will see higher prices at the pump starting July 1, as the state’s annual adjustment to the motor fuel tax takes effect. This increase, part of a broader infrastructure funding strategy, will impact both gasoline and diesel fuel, as well as alternative fuels such as LPG, LNG, and CNG.
The gas tax, currently set at 45 cents per gallon, will rise to 48.3 cents per gallon. Diesel fuel will also see an increase, with the tax moving from 54 cents to 55 cents per gallon.
- gasoline/gasohol – $0.483 per gallon
- diesel fuel – $0.558 per gallon
- liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – $0.558 per gallon
- liquefied natural gas (LNG) – $0.558 per gallon
- compressed natural gas (CNG) – $0.483 per gallon
Illinois’ motor fuel tax was last overhauled in 2019, when lawmakers doubled the tax and added provisions for annual inflationary adjustments. The revenue supports critical infrastructure projects, including road and bridge repairs across the state.
The state also collects a prepaid sales tax on motor fuel, which is adjusted monthly and can be checked on the Department of Revenue’s website.
