Hughey finishes third in the 200 and 400 meter races at the Illinois Top Times unofficial indoor state meet

Mahomet-Seymour junior DeAngelo Hughey was the only male athlete in Class 2A to place among the top eight runners in both the 200- and 400-meter sprint races on Saturday (March 25) in the Illinois Top Times unofficial indoor state meet at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center.
He captured third in each race. In the 400 meters, he registered a lifetime-best 50.07 seconds.
Hughey is closing in on the oldest school record at M-S, Cully Welter’s 400-meter time of 49.0 seconds set in 1987.
In the 200-meter finals at the Illinois Top Times meet – which took place 50 minutes after the 400 race – Hughey was timed in 22.71 seconds.
He also competed in the 60-meter dash and finished in 10th place with a 7.15-second clocking.
Because of the timing of the 200 finals, directly before the 1,600-meter relay, Hughey was unable to participate on the meet-ending relay.
The all-sophomore 1,600-meter foursome of Travis Hoffman, Blake Dillman, Joshua Franklin and Kaden Jackson turned in a 3:40.56 time, which placed the group in 12th.
Dillman (54.57) had the unit’s second-best 400-meter split even though he did a 360-degree turn during a fumbled handoff.
Franklin had the fastest split (53.69 seconds). Jackson slowed down the stretch after suffering a strained hip flexor.
Dillman, who is rounding back into shape after recently missing a week of practice due to an illness, was also entered in the 800 meters and wound up in 15th (2:05.75).
Senior Cole Marshall, in his final indoor meet, produced his two-best marks ever in the triple jump and finished fifth. He was seeded 12th in the event. His top effort was 42 feet, 2 inches. He also had a mark of 42 feet, which exceeded his previous best.
Despite using a borrowed pole which he had never practiced on, sophomore Ty Clark claimed ninth in the pole vault (12 feet, 8 inches).
M-S returns to action on Saturday (April 8) in its outdoors opener at the Mount Zion Invitational.
