Hubbs receives second place in video contest through University of Illinois

Mahomet-Seymour senior Josh Hubbs’ video “Money Talks” received second place a contest hosted by the University of Illinois College of Business.

Hubbs’ video was a response to an Bulldog TV assignment where students created a short-film to help teenagers understand how to be smart with their money. All of the students in the class were required to enter their video into the contest.

“I was hoping I’d win,” Hubbs said. “I watched the other videos on there, and they weren’t keeping my interest. They were more statistically accurate, but that’s not what’s going to interest teenagers. I wanted to keep my peers interested in the video, laugh a little bit, but still get the point across about how to be money smart.”

A varsity athlete, Hubbs does not have a lot of time to work during the school year. He does work during the summer months, though. His parents have also set up a savings account with interest for him.

“I just thought about what I do to save money,” he said. “When I get fast food, I look for two-for-one deals or happy hours. These are things I do in my own life. It’s not saving thousands and thousands of dollars, but it’s saving enough to where it’ll add up eventually.”

In the “Money Talks” comedy, the nasally “Richard Magenta” interviews three teenage millionaires, who share their tips on how to use coupons, save money or not buy things in excess or on impulse. Hubbs developed his characters based on the types of voices he could pull off.

Hubbs will attend North Central where he will study business and play baseball.
