Free throws put Mahomet-Seymour over Mattoon
By Fred Kroner
The Bulldogs netted 12 of 15 free throws and rallied for a 28-25 win at Mattoon in the season-opener for the eighth-grade girls’ basketball squad
Mattoon held an 11-4 lead after the first quarter.
“They were able to shake off the rust and fight back to take the lead by halftime,” M-S coach Jimmy Lanphear said.
Grace Binkley led the Bulldogs with 10 points. Ellie Dallas and Reese Gallier chipped in with seven and six points, respectively.
“A large portion of both (M-S) teams have only been with us for one or two practices before (Saturday), which makes these even more impressive,” Lanphear said.
Members of the sectional championship volleyball teams got a late start in basketball due to the length of the volleyball season.
On Monday (March 22), M-S’ eighth-graders dropped a 32-14 decision at Paris Crestwood.
M-S (1-1) returns to action on Thursday (March 25) in its home-opener against St. Joseph.
