Five Bulldogs named to Apollo Conference first team
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour’s Apollo Conference championship team was rewarded with five first-team berths on the league’s 11-player all-conference team.
The Bulldogs’ first teamers were seniors Kia Jones (midfielder), Isaac Warren (midfielder) and Nolan Wheeler (striker) along with juniors Ian Dobrucki (defender) and Hayden Litteken (goalkeeper).
None of the five are repeat first-teamers, but Jones, Warren and Wheeler all moved up from the second team in 2022.
Two M-S defensive stalwarts earned second-team all-Apollo status: junior Brody Back and senior Alex O’Brian.
Wheeler netted a team-best 38 goals, the second-best single-season total in school history. Warren was second this year with 27 goals. Both standouts posted four hat tricks for the season.
Jones, who previously garnered All-State recognition, recorded a school season record of 31 assists.
Wheeler finished his time at M-S with a school-record 72 career goals. Jones notched a school-record 56 career assists.
Litteken was the final line of defense for a unit which shut out 13 of 25 opponents this season, including eight of 10 in conference matches.
In all, 17 different Bulldogs had either a goal or an assist this season in varsity matches.
M-S ended the year with a 16-5-4 overall record. In Apollo Conference matches, coach Jeremy Davis’ team was 8-0-2.
Under Davis’ tutelage, the Bulldogs have earned back-to-back Apollo Conference titles in boys’ soccer as well as championships in four of the past five seasons.
