Fire at Lake of the Woods Apartments
Fire Departments from Champaign County joined the Corn Belt Fire Department as they spent hours putting out a fire at Lake of the Woods Apartment Friday afternoon.
Nearly twenty people, including seven Mahomet-Seymour students, were affected by the blaze that took the roof off the 500 building of the complex.
“ I am sure the response from our community will be strong as has been the case in several instances similar to today’s event,” Mahomet-Seymour School Superintendent Rick Johnston said in an School Reach email this afternoon.
The Mahomet Red Cross is looking for families who need assistance. The Mahomet Christian Church, located behind Lake of the Woods Apartments on Lake of the Woods Road has taken in those evacuated from the building at this time. The Red Cross will find out what the families need.
Local churches such as the Community Free Church of Mahomet and Grace Church are offering immediate assistance for families, also. As information about needs come in, Grace Church hopes to serve as a donation spot. More information on this will come later.
Mahomet-Seymour counselors are also working with the Red Cross and the local churches to make sure the Mahomet-Seymour students are taken care of.
The Mahomet Daily will bring you more information as it becomes available. We will also update you on places to donate clothes, food and money as needed.
