Fifteen Mahomet-Seymour football players receive Apollo Conference honors
By Fred Kroner
Fifteen Mahomet-Seymour football players earned all-league accolades from the Apollo Conference, including 13 who were selected for the first team.
Headlining the first unit were seven defensive players, three of whom were unanimous selections.
The unanimous defensive picks were junior defensive end Jack Gallier, senior middle linebacker Brennan Houser and senior free safety Braden Houchin.
Other Bulldog first-teamers on the defensive side were senior defensive end Mateo Casillas, senior strong safety Kale Schweighart and senior inside linebackers Nick Golden and Ben Wagner.
The offensive all-stars featured two unanimous choices, senior left guard Mikane Didier and senior receiver Quenton Rogers.
Other first-teamers on offense were senior right guard Marshall Bachar, senior quarterback Wyatt Bohm, junior running back Luke Johnson and senior wide receiver Valient Walsh.
In all, there were 25 athletes named to the first team.
M-S’ repeat first-team selections were Bohm, Casillas, Gallier, Golden, Johnson and Rogers.
Gallier and Golden are both three-time all-Apollo first-teamers.
The Bulldogs are coached by Jon Adkins.
The M-S representatives on the second team were both tabbed on the defensive unit, senior noseguard Ryan Yancy and senior cornerback Jake Waldinger.
On the second team, a total of 24 Apollo athletes were honored.
M-S was unbeaten in Apollo Conference games for the second year in a row and ended the year with an 11-1 overall record, after suffering elimination in the IHSA Class 5A quarterfinal round on Saturday (Nov. 12) at Morris.
The Bulldogs set team school records for points scored in a season (536) and for per-game scoring average (44.7).
In addition to his other documented accolades, Bohm set a mark with the most career games passing for at least 150 yards (14). His updated career passing yardage (5,683) moved him to second on the school charts behind only Bodie Reeder (now an assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls), who amassed 6,295 yards in four years. Bohm’s passing totals are the most for a Bulldog in a two-year span.
