If there is one thing that can bring generations of people together, it’s music.
Especially when it’s the songs that Elvis Presley sang.
Bringing generations together is exactly what The Glenwood Assisted Living of Mahomet has set its sights on over the years. And on Jan. 23, it will provide that opportunity for the young at heart to come together from 2 to 3:30 p.m. as an Elvis impersonator performs live for residents and guests.
“We will have refreshments for our guests to enjoy while listening to the music, sometimes the audience may even get up and dance,” The Glenwood Marketing Director Kristin Nottingham said.
Nottingham said that providing music that the Glenwood residents grew up with oftentimes brings back memories of years gone by.
“Many people have fond memories of listening to Elvis and it seems that he really hits home for many seniors,” Nottingham said.
The Glenwood of Mahomet Administrator Tori Tinsley added, “Music therapy is so important because it brings us back to those special moments. I think this will be a cool moment and thought it would be awesome to share with the community.”
Part of opening the doors of The Glenwood to the community is to provide socialization opportunities for the residents.
“Having some new faces in the building and new people to talk to is nice to mix things up,” Nottingham said.
The other part is to allow the community to see The Glenwood Assisted Living of Mahomet facilities.
“Many people think Assisted Living facilities are more like Nursing Homes, and they are very different,” Nottingham said.
Glenwood residents enjoy sitting in the common areas to greet visitors between the daily activities that include Bingo, Wii in the fitness room, crafts, reading by the fireplace, and much more.
“When the community comes into The Glenwood, they can experience first-hand the beauty of our facility. They can meet Tori (the Administrator), and our friendly staff. They can see our large dining room and all of the amenities we offer.
“They can also talk directly to some of our residents who enjoy sitting out in the common areas and greeting visitors.”
Nottingham added that visitors don’t have to wait for an event to come in to see The Glenwood or visit with residents.
“We welcome walk-ins and would be happy to show them our facility and give them some more information,” she said.
Tinsley said that she is excited for Elvis Live at The Glenwood.
“This generation loves Elvis,” she said.
Nottingham added that visitors don’t have to stay the entire time; they can come for 15 minutes, say hello and enjoy a few songs.
