Several Eagle Scouts from Troop 103 helped 13-year-old Jason Webb complete his Eagle Scout project at Sangamon Elementary on July 20 through 22.
Webb’s mother, Sangamon librarian Amy Webb, approached Sangamon Principal Mark Cabutti in the spring as he began to think about projects to do. Cabutti had already slated a seventeen-year-old white fence which lines the entrance to the school to be replaced.
The old fence required paint maintenance each summer. Cabutti told Webb when the original fence was built there were two or three feet of concrete poured below the posts, which also needed to be removed.
After a full day of labor, the boys installed a vinyl fence, which will require minimal maintenance from year to year.
Cabutti plans to refresh the flowers in front of the school next summer, so while Webb’s crew took out the plants around the fence, they did not replace them. Instead, they laid mulch around the fence, and trimmed the bushes.
Funds for this project came from the Sangamon Elementary beautification fund. Each spring during Earth week, Sangamon sells little Earth Day trinkets to students before school to raise money for any landscaping projects.
Webb researched prices for the vinyl fence, concrete and mulch, then came up with a proposal to present to Cabutti which was within the Sangamon budget.
While Webb planned on the project taking two days, it took an extra day to complete. During the project, Webb realized he had to be flexible while leading his crew.
“I was really impressed with how he can actually lead the boys,” said Jason’s father, Dan Webb.
Boys and fathers from the troop came to the sight to help on the day of the project. Boy Scouts have service project hour requirements to fulfill.
“The scouts are all community driven, so the scouts and their parents help out,” Dan said.
Jason helped one of his peers with an Eagle Scout project when the Mahomet Public Library moved locations.
Webb has more merit badges to earn as an Eagle Scout.
Cabutti said he took a level out to the site, and thought the boys did a marvelous job with the project.
