The Village of Mahomet has announced David Smysor as its next Chief of Police. Smysor, currently Deputy Chief of Police for the City of Urbana, will officially assume the chief’s role on October 1, 2025.
Smysor brings 24 years of law enforcement experience, all with the Urbana Police Department, where he began as a patrol officer in 2001. Smysor served as an Adult Felony Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Criminal Investigation Lieutenant, and Patrol Division Lieutenant before becoming Deputy Chief. In his current role, he is responsible for the strategic oversight of patrol, investigations, and administration divisions.
A resident of Mahomet, Smysor holds a Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration from Western Illinois University. He is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy (291st Session) and completed Police Staff and Command training at Northwestern University. Additionally, he served in the Illinois National Guard from 1997 to 2005 and is a member of several professional associations, including the FBI National Academy Associates, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
“My past experiences in law enforcement have provide me with a strong foundation in community-focused policing, crisis leadership, personnel development, and strategic planning,” said Smysor. “I understand the values and expectations of Mahomet’s residents, and I am honored to help lead and serve in a way that reinforces trust, accountability, and collaboration between the police department and the community.”
Smysor will start working with the Village on September 1, 2025, partnering with outgoing Chief Metzler for a month to ensure a seamless handover. The public search for a new chief began in May, guided by the recruitment firm Arndt Municipal Support Inc.
