Creel honored by the City of Champaign
Champaign Police Officer and Mahomet resident Jeffrey Creel was recognized by the City of Champaign in a virtual ceremony Wednesday night for the courage and loyalty he showed on May 19 when he and his partner Chris Oberheim responded to a call.
Creel and Oberheim responded to a domestic disturbance call for service on May 19 in the 2400 block of North Neil Street in Champaign. Oberheim was shot and killed. Creel was also shot three times. He was released from the hospital two days later.
Creel earned the “Personal Integrity” Award from the City of Champaign for the bravery he showed during the incident, and also for staying by his partner’s side after he had been shot.
“You were there with your courage and your heroism, there to care for your friend and your colleague through a tragic incident that we know will impact you for the rest of your life,” City Manager Dorothy David said to Creel.
David said Creel stands for everything it means to be a public servant.
