Community Thanksgiving Service a holiday tradition
The tradition of gathering as a community to give thanks has been a part of the Mahomet community for decades. Each year, churches rally together to produce the Mahomet Thanksgiving Service.
“I think we are all part of the same team,” First Baptist Church Pastor Brian Romanowski said. “We are working for God’s kingdom. Working together and being united follows what Jesus talked about in John 17. One of the last things He said before he was arrested and crucified was that he prayed that we would all be one. I think in coming together and doing events like this we are showing the world that we truly are one community in Christ.”
This year, churches invite the Mahomet community to celebrate with them on Sun. at 6 p.m. in the Mahomet-Seymour High School auditorium.
Each year, church leaders rotate the logistics of the service. This year John McIntosh from the Mahomet United Methodist Church will speak. McIntosh joined the Mahomet community in July. All churches involved in the service will participate in some way.
The Sangamon Valley Christian Center will lead worship. The Mahomet-Seymour Madrigals will perform.
Nearly 400 people attended the service last year.
The Mahomet Thanksgiving Service began at the Elks Pavilion in Lake of the Woods. Eventually churches shared the host church responsibility year after year. Two years ago the service moved to MSHS.
“It’s meant to bring the community together again, particularly under the banner of what the churches are trying to do in serving Mahomet spiritually,” Mahomet Christian Church Pastor David Johnson said. “We all care about this community, and we’re doing our best to do the Lord’s work and serve them.”
A free will offering for Helping Hands will be taken.
