Senior Grant Coleman registered a school-record performance on Tuesday at Mattoon.
The 6-foot-7 Coleman shattered a 48-year-old school scoring record by notching 44 points in 24 minutes against the Green Wave. M-S hammered Mattoon 73-37.
Coleman was 16 of 24 from the field, including 5 for 7 from three-point range. He also sunk 7 of 9 free throws.
His outburst erased the previous M-S single-game standard of 43 points, set by Steve Rinkel in a 1972 regional tournament game against Saybrook-Arrowsmith.
Rinkel played prior to the creation of the three-point shot. He made 18 baskets in his top game.
Coleman’s previous high game for the season was 34 points.
Eli Warren tossed in 10 points in Tuesday’s game and Kobe Essien added six points to go with a team-high five rebounds.
Cole Lener finished with eight assists, five steals, four rebounds and three points, all from the free throw line.
Coleman also had four steals and two rebounds.
M-S led 24-13 after one quarter and was ahead 34-22 at halftime. The Bulldogs put up 27 more points in the third period.
“We came out and played one of our better games of the season after having a rough 36-hour stretch over the weekend,” M-S coach Ryan Bosch said.
For the season, Coleman is averaging 21.9 points per game and has made 28 of his 115 field goals from three-point range.
