Christie Clinic: How to Avoid Slips and Falls in the Winter

By Olivia Martin, PT, DPT

Winter weather often comes with a price – icy sidewalks and slippery surfaces that increase the risk of slips and falls. These accidents can lead to serious injuries, ranging from sprains and fractures to more severe complications. To enjoy the winter season without the worry of falls, it’s important to take proactive steps to ensure your safety.

Wear Proper Footwear: Invest in footwear with good traction. Look for shoes or boots with non-slip soles and deep treads. Avoid smooth-soled shoes, as they lack the grip needed to navigate icy surfaces.

Walk Cautiously: Adopt a cautious walking style in icy conditions. Take smaller steps and shuffle your feet to maintain balance. Keep your center of gravity over your feet and avoid making sudden movements.

Clear Pathways: Keep your outdoor pathways and driveways clear of snow and ice. Regularly shovel snow and apply ice melt or sand to improve traction.

Use Handrails: When walking up or down stairs, always use handrails for support. This simple step can provide crucial stability, helping you maintain balance even on slippery surfaces.

Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on your surroundings and the path ahead. Avoid distractions like texting or browsing on your phone while walking in icy conditions.

Plan Ahead: Check weather forecasts to stay informed about potential icy conditions. If you know there will be ice or snow, plan extra time for your journey. Rushing increases the risk of accidents, so give yourself enough time to navigate safely.

Be Mindful of Indoor Conditions: Slips and falls can also occur indoors when you track snow and water inside. Be sure to wipe your shoes on a mat before entering a building.

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, but it also presents challenges, particularly when it comes to slippery surfaces. By following these tips and being proactive about your safety, you can reduce the risk of slips and falls and confidently enjoy the season.
