Champaign, Mahomet, Savoy see growth in 2020 Census results

Champaign County was one of the few counties in Illinois to see population growth over the last decade, according to the 2020 United States Census.

The 2010 Census captured 201,181 residents while the 2020 Census showed 205, 865 residents. 

The City of Champaign saw the greatest number of new residents, gaining 7247 (81,055 in 2010; 88,302 in 2020) residents while Urbana lost 2914 (41,250 in 2010; 38,336 in 2020). Those two municipalities make up 61.5-percent of the total county population.

While data from some of the other municipalities throughout Champaign County is not available yet, Mahomet and Savoy also saw gains over the 10 year period. 

Mahomet grew from 7,258 (2010) to 9,434 (2020) residents. Mahomet held a special Census in 2017, showing 8,400 residents. In 2019, the Village annexed about 300 residents in Briarcliff, Lakeview, and Summit Ridge Subdivisions. 

Savoy’s population grew from 7,280 (2010) to 8,857 (2020). Savoy also held a special Census in 2016 that captured 8,607 residents. 

According to the 2019 American community survey, which was included in the US Census report, people who identify as white account for 96.8-percent of the population, which is up from 2010 when 95.88-percent of the population identified as white. 5.1-percent of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino while .7-percent identified as Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; .5-percent identified as Asian and .3-percent identified as Black or African American.

US Census Bureau data from 2015-2019 showed that the median value of owner-occupied housing units is $240,300, the highest median value in Champaign County. Mahomet residents also held the highest median household income from 2015-2019 at $113,261.

From 2015-2019 Mahomet had 2,958 households with an average of 2.84 persons per household.
