Champaign County Opens Registration for Spring Electronics Recycling Event

Residents of Champaign County can now register for the upcoming Residential Electronics Collection Event, scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2025. This bi-annual initiative aims to provide a convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of electronic waste.

The collection event will take place at Parkland College, located at 2400 W. Bradley Avenue in Champaign. Participants are asked to use the Duncan Road entrance and follow red signs to the drop-off site. Registration is mandatory and can be completed online by selecting a 15-minute time slot and submitting required information. Once registered, participants will receive a confirmation email or text message.

Approximately 10–14 days before the event, registrants will receive a postcard in the mail that serves as their ticket to the event. If the postcard does not arrive, participants can present their confirmation email or text instead.

What Can Be Recycled?

The event accepts a wide range of electronics, including:

  • Televisions: All types and sizes (limit of four TVs per person/postcard).
  • Computers and Accessories: Laptops, tablets, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, scanners, external drives, and more.
  • Other Electronics: Video game consoles, stereo equipment (metal/plastic casing only), digital cameras, holiday string lights, rechargeable batteries, networking equipment like routers and modems, and EV chargers.

Hard drives and cell phones will be securely destroyed at the recycling facility to ensure data protection.

Items not accepted include wooden stereo speakers or cabinets, small appliances (e.g., blenders), exercise equipment (e.g., treadmills), light bulbs, loose alkaline batteries, and freon-containing items like air conditioners or dehumidifiers. For guidance on recycling these items elsewhere, residents can refer to the City of Champaign’s “Where Do I Recycle It?” webpage.

This free event is open exclusively to residents of participating communities within Champaign County. Communities include Bondville, Broadlands, Champaign, Fisher, Foosland, Gifford, Homer, Ivesdale, Longview, Ludlow, Mahomet, Ogden, Pesotum,  Philo, Rantoul, Royal, Sadorus, Savoy, Sidney, St. Joseph, Thomasboro, Tolono, Urbana, and Unincorporated Champaign County. Residents outside these areas are not eligible to participate.

In case of rain or adverse weather conditions on May 17th, the event will proceed as planned but may experience longer wait times due to reduced volunteer availability. Severe weather could lead to cancellation.

For those unable to attend the spring event, a fall collection is scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025. Registration for that event will open on September 1st.
