Cabarello, Casillas, Tompkins win at Reed Custer Invitational

Three Mahomet-Seymour wrestlers won championships in their weight classes on Saturday (Jan. 20) at the Reed Custer Junior High Wrestling Invitational, in Braidwood.
The Bulldogs titlists were Nino Cabarello (now 11-2 for the season at 155 pounds), Marco Casillas (now12-0 overall at 167 pounds) and Jayvon Tompkins (now 9-0 at 275 pounds).
Cabarello posted two pins and one win by technical fall. Casillas pinned all three of his tournament foes. Tompkins also recorded three pins for the day.
Placing second for M-S were Grant Morphew (now 11-2 at 80 pounds), Niko Truax (now 5-7 at 105 pounds) and Connor McCall (now 7-5 at 185 pounds).
Truax and McCall both registered two pins.
Winning third-place matches for the Bulldogs were Graham Smolich (now 8-4 at 80 pounds), Myles Hartzler (now 11-4 at 75 pounds), Joe Vrona (now 12-4 at 119 pounds) and Chris Dill (now 13-2 at 145 pounds).
Hartzler, Vrona and Dill all pinned three opponents. Smolich collected one pin.
Austin Lamb (215 pounds) took fourth, Noah Snyder (135 pounds) finished in fifth place and Tristen Milinkovich (70 pounds) wound up in sixth place.
Lamb and Snyder each secured two wins by pin.
The other M-S placers were Noah Meints (seventh at 95 pounds), Wyatt Bell (seventh at 100 pounds) and Caleb Scott (eighth at 112 pounds).
Meints, Bell and Scott all tallied two pins.
Coal City scored 289 ½ points and edged M-S (285 points) for team supremacy in the 18-team event.
Prior to the tournament, M-S won four of five dual meets to start the season.
On Wednesday (Jan. 10), M-S topped Lincoln, 96-6, and Normal Kingsley, 75-27, at home. On Thursday (Jan. 11), the Bulldogs fell to Bloomington, 58-40, in Bloomington. On Wednesday (Jan. 17), M-S returned to its winning ways at home, handling both Champaign Edison (71-39) and Bloomington George Evans (69-32).
For the five dual meets and the tournament, Morphew had a 7-1 record, Vrona was 9-2, Dill was 8-1, Cabarello was 8-0, Casillas was 8-0, and Tompkins was 6-0 with six pins.

The M-S junior varsity squad placed 10th in the 20-school Bloomington JV Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 20).
M-S totaled 107 points. Meet champion Bloomington amassed 325 points.
The Bulldogs had one individual champion. Caden Abercrombie was 4-0 at 167 pounds. He pinned his first three opponents and prevailed in the finals, 7-6.
The lone M-S runner-up was Noah Fonner, who was 4-1 at 155 pounds.
The team’s other placers were Bentley Wycoff (third at 85 pounds), Xavier Foster (third at 112 pounds), Chase Haskett (fifth in the B Division of the 112-pound weight class), Andrew Dalangin (fifth at 215 pounds), Brayden Watts (sixth at 85 pounds) and Drew Good (sixth at 145 pounds).
Wycoff and Foster both had 5-1 tournament records. Fonner was 4-1 at the event.
Seven other M-S participants won at least two bouts at Bloomington, but fell short of placing.
Kaden Johnson was 4-2 at 119 pounds, Camden Ashby was 3-2 at 145 pounds, Finn Noonan was 2-2 at 90 pounds, Jack Wilks was 2-2 at 105 pounds, Noah Vilt was 2-2 at 105 pounds, Dylan Heckman was 2-2 at 126 pounds and Lucas Vanderstraeten was 2-2 at 145 pounds.
Teammates who earned one tournament win were Beau McMurry (112 pounds) and Chevy Clark (119 pounds).
M-S will return to action on Thursday (Feb. 25) at Gibson City, where there will also be a dual meet against Prairie Central.
