By Fred Kroner
Cayla Koerner’s buzzer-beater capped Mahomet-Seymour’s comeback from a 15-point halftime deficit on Monday (Feb. 22) as the Bulldogs edged visiting Mattoon 63-62 in an Apollo Conference girls’ basketball contest.
Mattoon, which had beaten M-S by seven points earlier this month, built a 35-20 halftime cushion in the rematch.
The Bulldogs cut their deficit to six points entering the final eight minutes, 49-43.
“The momentum changed once Emma Clements took a charge to start the fourth quarter,” M-S coach Garret Risley said.
Savannah Orgeron tallied 26 points, a team-high for M-S this season.
Durbin Thomas made a season-high 11 points and Nichole Taylor scored 10 points while latching onto a team-high seven rebounds.
Koerner hit nine points, none bigger than her game-winning basket with two seconds remaining.
Abigail Bunting ended with seven points.
Orgeron and Thomas each claimed five rebounds. Bunting had three steals and Taylor blocked two shots.
Orgeron has made a team-high 16 three-point shots this season, including at least one in each of the team’s games to date.
M-S (5-3) returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 25) at Effingham.
