Busey notifies customers of vishing scam

Press Release from Busey Bank 3.17.2014

Champaign, IL – Scammers looking to steal information from unsuspecting telephone users have begun contacting area residents. Busey has received numerous reports from customers and non-customers of recent vishing attempts. Vishing is a social engineering technique for acquiring personal or financial information from consumers using the telephone network.

According to complaints, residents received automated phone calls stating ‘your debit card needs to be reactivated’ or ‘there is a billing issue with your card’ beginning Monday, March 17.

“Busey and other financial institutions will never call a customer regarding card activation or requesting personal information,” says Heidi Ponder, Vice President and Fraud Officer. “Criminals are relying on technology, such as cell phones, to commit fraud and identity theft. These scammers are also using Busey’s name to trick area residents into submitting their information.”

If you receive an automated phone call or text claiming to be from Busey, do not respond, simply hang up or delete the text. If you have given out your personal information please contact your
financial institution. Busey Customer Support is available to answer questions or concerns through secure chat at busey.com and by phone at 800.672.8739. For more on vishing and other threats to personal information, visit the information security center on busey.com.

Included in this release are ‘Information Security Begins With You’ and ‘Social Engineering’. These pieces are offered through Busey’s information security center, and are valuable resources to assist in protecting individuals from scam attempts.
