Bulldogs win at home over Teutopolis
By Fred Kroner
Senior Blake Wolters pitched four innings of one-hit ball, striking out 11, walking no one and allowing no runs, as the Mahomet-Seymour baseball team opened the home portion of its schedule on Monday (March 27) with a 9-3 triumph over Teutopolis.
Two dozen major league scouts were in attendance to watch Wolters, a University of Arizona signee who is considered a potential pick in the amateur June draft. Wolters had a pitch clocked at 98 mph on the radar gun.
Wolters was also 3-for-3 at the plate, clubbing two home runs (one of which was a grand slam) and driving in five runs for the second consecutive game.
Carter Selk finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Mateo Casillas pitched two innings and Mason Orton worked the final frame. Casillas fanned four batters and Orton whiffed three batsmen.
On Tuesday (March 28), Alex McHale and three other M-S pitchers teamed up on a two-hitter as the Bulldogs scored a 12-1 win at Stanford Olympia.
McHale worked two scoreless and hitless innings, earning his first win of the spring.
Joining him for one-inning stints on the mound were Alec Bergman, Braden Houchin and Cade Starrick.
The offense was spearheaded by Jake Waldinger, who belted doubles for both of his hits. Waldinger drove in three runs. Selk hammered a home run and delivered two RBI.
The other extra-base hit by the Bulldogs was a double by Carter Johnson.
Wolters scored three runs. Both McHale and Ben Wagner crossed home plate twice.
M-S was 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts. Wagner swiped three bases. Stealing two bases apiece were Gavin Bailey, McHale and Wolters.
M-S (5-1) puts a five-game winning streak on the line in its next contest, weather permitting, on Friday (March 31) at Armstrong-Potomac. The Bulldogs are slated to play at Lincoln (11 a.m.) on Saturday (April 1) and Wolters is scheduled to make his third start of the season in the Apollo Conference opener.
