Bulldogs set PRs at Detweiller Park

Five of the seven Mahomet-Seymour runners who competed in the varsity division of the Richard Spring boys’ cross-country invitational on Saturday (Sept. 17) at Peoria’s Detweiller Park set personal records.
Running their career-best for a 3-mile course were freshman Augustus Gaudio (80th place in 15 minutes, 57.9 seconds), freshman Henry McMurry (211th in 16:58.8), sophomore Lukas Nykaza (255th in 17:21.2), sophomore Kaleb Kasper (275th in 17:29.8) and junior Grant Smysor (293rd in 17:37.8).
Other M-S participants in the varsity race were Ben Wallace (240th in 17:15.6) and Emmett Kearns (242nd in 17:16.7).
The split between the Bulldogs’ second- and seventh-place finishers was 39 seconds. There were 474 varsity finishers.
M-S placed 35th in the 71-school boys’ field with a score of 1016. Meet champion Oak Park-River Forest had a cumulative total of 79.
In the open race, the Bulldogs ended 18th out of 44 teams with a team composite of 525 points. Meet champion Oak Park-River Forest ended with 83 points.
Two M-S runners ended among the top 75.
Hayden Grotelueschen was 36th in the 639-runner field (17:30.0) and Lukas Carey was 74th (17:58.6).
Other finishers for the team were Zach Wilcoski (105th in 18:24.2), Colin Johnson (232nd in 19:54.1.), Gavin Fan (260th in 20:11.8), Henry Carpenter (394th in 21:46.6), Alex Carpenter (578th in 25:17.1) and Ben Schultz (636th in 37:01.9).
M-S returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 24) in the East Peoria Invitational at Illinois Central College.
