Bulldogs place fifth at Centennial Invitational

Owen Kearns was the winner on Saturday (Jan. 6) in the 500-yard freestyle to spark the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ swimming team, which placed fifth in the 17-school Centennial Invitational.
Kearns’ time was 4 minutes, 55.51 seconds. He was also the fourth-place finisher in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.34).
Two other Bulldogs produced at least one top-four individual finish.
Emmett Kearns ended third in the 50-yard freestyle (22.89 seconds) as well as seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (51.31 seconds).
Aron Varga was the third-place finisher in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.21) and added a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.88).
Two M-S relays also fared well and featured the same four competitors.
The 200-yard freestyle relay foursome of Varga, Emmett Kearns, Matthew Kirby and Owen Kearns wound up in third place (1:34.66).
Swimming in a different order, the same grouping took fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:31.47.
The Bulldogs compiled 165 points.
Meet champion Waubonsie Valley amassed 485 points and was followed by Champaign Central (295), Urbana Uni High (224), Dunlap (220) and M-S.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (Jan. 11) at the Normal West Quadrangular.
