By FRED KRONER
Eli Warren scored seven of his team-high 18 points in overtime on Wednesday (Feb. 24) as the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ basketball team pulled away from Taylorville, 48-42, for an Apollo Conference win at home.
The teams were tied 40-40 after regulation.
Warren also had a team-high five assists.
“He was really instrumental in this victory and continues to be a catalyst for us offensively,” M-S head coach Ryan Bosch said.
Blake Wolters posted 11 points and three steals for the Bulldogs. Braden Finch notched eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
Bosch said that Finch’s defense was “also a huge key in the victory, as he was relentless off the ball and helping teammates.”
Luke Koller scored six points and, for the fourth game in a row, was the leading M-S rebounder. Koller cleared seven boards. Zach Carr added five points and four rebounds. Zach Travis handled five rebounds.
The Bulldogs recovered from a 9-7 first-quarter deficit to build a 25-16 halftime lead. The Tornadoes regrouped and forged a 33-33 tie entering the final quarter.
Taylorville (5-5) pulled into a tie, 40-40, in the final minute. Wolters’ long three-point attempt at the end of regulation was off-target.
M-S (5-2) will put its three-game winning streak on the line on Friday (Feb. 26) at unbeaten and state-ranked Effingham, the last team to beat the Bulldogs. M-S will play host to Lincoln on Saturday (Feb. 27).
