Bulldogs open season with win over Bloomington
By Fred Kroner
Three freshmen notched goals in their first varsity match on Wednesday (March 15) as the Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer team carved out a 5-0 non-conference win at Bloomington.
Ella Walk (two goals), Paislee Welge (one goal) and Hannah Creel (one goal) all found the back of the net in their high school debut.
Emma Dallas hit the other M-S goal.
Walk and Welge each contributed one assist. Other Bulldogs with assists were Brielle Galvan, Alaina Jared and Abby Bunting.
The Bulldogs led, 3-0, at intermission.
“The freshmen stole the show for the Bulldogs,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “Three girls scored the first of what will inevitably be many career goals for Mahomet.
“All three freshmen (Walk, Welge and Creel) were able to fight off the nerves of their first high school minutes. It brought a smile to my face listening to their excited banter as they waited to get subbed in for the first time as a trio. They made their minutes count.”
Davis was happy with the outcome, but sees plenty of areas to address in practice.
“After a preseason of indoor training, the Bulldogs still have a lot to improve upon tactically,” Davis said. “The Bulldogs have a lot of work to do to better organize for next week‘s games against solid Peoria-area squads.”
The coach also lauded the play of Dallas, a senior striker.
“Emma Dallas was able to provide consistent pressure up top and scored her own goal,” Davis said.
M-S (1-0) returns to action for its home-opener on Thursday (March 23) against Metamora.
The Bulldogs won the junior varsity match, too, putting up six first-half goals on Bloomington.
