Bulldogs on 16-game win streak

Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade girls’ basketball team raised its winning streak to 16 games after rolling up four road victories in a six-day span.
On Tuesday (Nov. 9), M-S topped Prairie Central, 33-16. On Monday (Nov. 8), the Bulldogs overpowered Monticello, 36-9.
Lily Bosworth put up 10 points against Prairie Central and Ava Yeakel chipped in with eight points.
M-S was sparked by the duo of Hannah Creel (14 points) and Bosworth (six points) against Monticello.
On Thursday (Nov. 4), the Bulldogs earned a 27-16 win at Normal Kingsley.
Ava Yeakel hit a game-high 19 points, marking the sixth game where she has outscored or matched the opposing team for points in the game.
Creel added five points.
“The defense was on point for the Bulldogs,” M-S coach Jimmy Lanphear said. “Anytime Kingsley looked to make a push, we were able to contain and limit the damage.”
The eighth-graders added a Saturday (Nov. 6) win at Paris Crestwood, 27-17.
M-S trailed, 11-9, at halftime.
Creel led the Bulldogs, hitting 11 points. Yeakel added six points and netted four of six free throw attempts.
“The Bulldogs defense settled down and was able to hold the Eagles to one basket the entire half (outscoring them 18-6),” M-S coach Jimmy Lanphear said.
The seventh-graders suffered their second setback, dropping a 27-11 decision at Kingsley. Hannah Martin’s seven points led the Bulldogs.
On Saturday (Nov. 6), the seventh-grade Bulldogs suffered a 28-8 loss at Paris Crestwood. Addison Schultz scored four points. Courtney Fonte and Taylor Mills each contributed two points.
The Bulldog seventh-graders bounced back with two road wins this week, on Monday (Nov. 8) at Monticello 25-11 and on Tuesday (Nov. 9) at Prairie Central, 32-14.
Fonte drained 13 points as M-S became the first team to beat Monticello this season. Schultz and Breckyn Hess netted four points apiece.
Against Prairie Central, the Bulldogs displayed a balanced offensive attack. Fonte, Schultz and Hess all scored six points. Adding four points apiece were Mills and Martin.
The seventh-graders are 17-3. The eighth-graders are 19-1.
M-S returns to action on Monday (Nov. 15) at home against Champaign St. Matthew. The home finale will serve as the Eighth-Grade Night game.
