Bulldogs fall short in tough contests

Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams started the week with tough losses.

On Monday, the girls’ battled back from a seven-point deficit after one quarter in Mount Zion to carry a three-point lead into the final frame, before falling 59-50.

On Tuesday at home, the boys rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to force overtime before dropping a 73-67 decision to Mattoon.

Boys’ basketball

The M-S losing streak was extended to four with its second OT loss since Apollo Conference play began.

Grant Coleman tallied a game-high 27 points for the Bulldogs. Connor Kamphaus scored 12 points and shared the team-lead in rebounding (six) with Cole Lener.

Lener and Coleman each collected four steals.

Mattoon nailed 16 of 17 free throws. The Green Wave led, 33-28, at halftime.

M-S was 19 for 27 from the charity stripe.

M-S (6-10) returns to action on Friday at Effingham.

Girls’ basketball

The Bulldogs had two double-figure scorers in their Apollo Conference road loss against Mount Zion.

Kailyn Northrup tied her season-high with three three-pointers and notched 12 points. Makayla Rosenbery added 10 points.

Keida Nichols had matching point and rebound totals (eight). Ashley Wheeler also hauled down eight rebounds.

Rosenbery grabbed six rebounds and Nichols handed out five assists.

M-S (8-11) returns to action at home on Thursday against Effingham.
