Bulldogs end regular season with win over Champaign St. Matthew

Mahomet-Seymour’s seventh-grade girls’ basketball team closed out the regular season at home on Tuesday (Nov. 7) with a 35-15 win over Champaign St. Matthew.

Cambria Clark tallied a team-high 12 points. Emma Baker ended with 10 points, Kennedy Lee hit seven points and Layla Nagle added three points.

Phoebe Graham contributed two points and Kara Benway had the Bulldogs’ other point.

M-S led 16-11 at halftime and secured the win by allowing just four second-half points.

On Monday (Nov. 6), the Bulldogs lost a 28-17 decision at Monticello despite a 16-point performance from Clark.

The seventh-graders captured a 23-14 victory on Saturday (Nov. 4) at Paris Crestwood.

Clark and Kennedy Lee each recorded eight points. Emma Baker, Benway and Graham notched two points apiece. Olivia Banister added a free throw.

M-S jumped into leads of 8-0 after one quarter and 19-4 at halftime.

On Thursday (Nov. 2), the seventh-graders dropped a decision at Normal Kingsley, 46-16.

Baker and Lee each tossed in four points for M-S. Banister and Clark contributed three points apiece. Graham hit two points.

The Bulldogs trailed, 9-7, after one quarter, but had fallen behind, 20-9 at halftime.

The seventh-graders have an overall record of 19-5.

M-S is the top-seeded team in the Champaign Jefferson Class 4A IESA Regional, which starts on Saturday (Nov. 11).

The Bulldogs will play in the semifinals at 1:15 p.m. against either fourth-seeded Jefferson or fifth-seeded Danville North Ridge, who play earlier in the day.

M-S defeated both schools in mid-September.

The M-S girls’ eighth-grade squad snapped a four-game losing streak in its home finale on Tuesday (Nov. 7), handing St. Matthew a 25-18 setback.

Charlotte Sinclair scored eight points. Penelope Bird and Katie Hunter each collected four points.

Totaling three points apiece were Kennedy Ashby and Marley Cloward. Nora Huang added two points and Audra Martin finished with one point.

M-S led 12-8 at halftime and pulled away thereafter.

On Monday (Nov. 6), the Bulldogs dropped an 18-16 decision at Monticello. Bird netted 10 points.

M-S was down, 13-8, at halftime and rallied into a 16-16 deadlock in the final 90 seconds. After Monticello took the lead, the Bulldogs had five more shot attempts that didn’t fall.

The M-S eighth-graders took a 34-24 loss on Saturday (Nov. 24) at Paris Crestwood.

Bird registered a team-high eight points. Ashby and Cloward each ended with four points.

Chipping in with two points apiece were Madi Bain, Hunter, Martin and Sinclair.

The Bulldogs trailed, 6-4, after one quarter and 18-12 at halftime.

On Thursday (Nov. 2), the M-S eighth-grade squad suffered a 19-11 loss at Normal Kingsley.

The Bulldogs trailed, 6-0, after one quarter, but had cut their deficit to 10-9 entering the fourth stanza.

Martin led M-S with four points. Sinclair notched three points. Bain tallied two points. Adding one point apiece were Cloward and Lilly Meyer.

The eighth-graders have an overall record of 16-8.
