Bulldogs begin week with wins over Rantoul and Mattoon

Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade girls’ basketball team split two games on Saturday (Oct. 22) in the Teutopolis Round-Robin Tournament and then annexed more victories on Monday (Oct. 24) and Tuesday (Oct. 25).

At T-Town, the Bulldogs suffered a 30-19 loss to Taylorville, but rebounded to defeat the host school, 29-23 in overtime.

In the Monday game, M-S handed Rantoul Eater a 36-10 loss in Mahomet. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs prevailed at Mattoon, 33-.

Against Taylorville, Breckyn Hess scored four points and Taylor Mills added three points. Taylorville, which won a state championship in 2021, pulled away with a 17-0 second-quarter run.

Against T-Town, Courtney Fonte notched 14 points and Hess added nine points. Fonte meshed 4 of 5 free throws down the stretch.

Against Eater, Fonte and Hannah Martin both netted eight points and Payson Steers contributed six points. M-S carved a 16-4 lead after one stanza.

On Tuesday, the eighth-graders held a slender 2-0 lead after one quarter, but kept Mattoon scoreless the entire first half while pulling away for the victory.

Aubrey Meints scored a season-high eight points. Martin added seven, Fonte had five and Addison Schulze also netted five points. Fonte and Schulze each drained three-point shots.

The M-S eighth-graders have a 15-3 season record.

The Bulldogs’ seventh-grade team lost twice at Teutopolis before posting a convincing win at home over Rantoul Eater and then adding a win at Mattoon on Tuesday (Oct. 25).

In an overtime 28-26 loss to Taylorville, M-S received six points apiece from Lily Freiman and Katie Hunter. M-S carried a 20-14 lead into the fourth quarter.

In a 32-17 loss to T-Town, Audra Martin led the way with six points and Abi King made four points. M-S tried to claw its way back after falling behind, 17-4, at halftime.

In a 35-4 win over Eater, Marley Cloward drained a season-high eight points. Freiman hit six points and Hunter also contributed six points. The Bulldogs took control from the outset, building a 26-2 lead at halftime.

At Mattoon, the seventh-graders held Mattoon scoreless in the second half en route to 21-7 triumph. The M-S halftime lead was 14-7 with the final points coming on a buzzer-beating layup by Abi King.

King hit a team-high seven points. Cloward, Martin and Penelope Bird all made four points.

The seventh-graders are 13-5. Both M-S squads return to action on Monday (Oct 31) at home against Normal Parkside. The games will start a four-game homestand for the Bulldogs.
