Bulldogs begin baseball season with win over Normal Parkside

Marco Casillas drove in four runs on Thursday (Aug. 10) as the Mahomet-Seymour Junior High baseball team opened the season with a 5-3 triumph at Normal Parkside.
The first of Casillas’ two two-run doubles drove in Brennan Bailey and Camden Beedy in the first inning.
Casillas scored on an RBI-hit by Wil Selk.
Parkside created a 3-3 deadlock that lasted until the top of the seventh inning.
Casillas drilled the game-winning double, knocking in both Beedy and Bradley Jones.
Selk and Colin Whooley shared the pitching duties.
Selk worked the first four innings, fanning three hitters. Whooley finished the game and picked up the win. He preserved the victory by striking out the final two Parkside batters. In his stint, Whooley fanned four batters.
In the JV game, M-S and Parkside played to a 5-5 tie in a game called by darkness.
Beau McMurray worked out of a no-outs jam in the fifth inning with Parkside runners on second and third. He sandwiched a strikeout between two ground balls that he fielded to keep the tie intact.
On Saturday (Aug. 12), M-S posted a 9-1 win at Mattoon.
Bailey pitched a complete game and earned the win. He walked one batter and struck out three.
Bailey, who was backed by an errorless defense, scored the tying run in the sixth inning on a hit by Casillas, who tallied the go-ahead run on a single by Preston Clark.
Beedy and Selk each scored two runs. Henry contributed two RBI.
The M-S junior varsity squad dropped a 6-5 decision at Mattoon.
The M-S varsity (2-0) will return to action on Thursday (Aug. 17) at Champaign Jefferson.
