Bulldog softball wins Regional Semifinal game
Against an opponent they were 1-1 against during the regular season, the Bulldogs opened the softball postseason on Wednesday (June 2) with an emphatic 9-1 triumph over Lincoln in a Class 3A regional semifinal softball game at home.
All three games in the season series were played in Mahomet.
Abigail Akers had her first four-hit game of the spring to spark the M-S offense. Aubrie Shore belted a single, double and triple and walked on her other plate appearance. Karley Yergler swatted two hits as did Chloe Truax.
Yergler (30) and Shore (24) have teamed up to hit 54 extra-base hits in the first 23 M-S games. In Shore’s last three games, she has 10 hits in 11 official at-bats.
After yielding a two-out home run in the first inning, winning pitcher Yergler (11-5) finished with 6 1/3 shutout innings. She fashioned a two-hitter, walked two and struck out 12.
Yergler has a five-game winning streak. During that span, she has thrown 39 innings, allowed 20 hits, three walks and struck out 63 batters. In those outings, her earned run average is 1.26.
M-S (16-7) will play at top-seeded Canton on Thursday (June 3) in the 4:30 p.m. regional championship game. Canton received a bye into the championship game.
The Bulldogs are seeking their fifth regional championship in softball. The other four have all occurred within the past decade.
