By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour split a softball doubleheader at Lincoln on Saturday (April 2), suffering its first loss of the year in the second game.
M-S won the opener, 7-0, behind the one-hit pitching of Karley Yergler, who struck out 10 batters in her second seven-inning shutout of the spring.
Yergler also paced the offense with a single, triple, home run and four runs batted in. Abbey Akers stroked two hits. Maddie Cortez scored two runs and Sydney Ward had two RBI.
In the nightcap, Akers socked two of the Bulldogs’ four hits. She is the only squad member with hits in each of the school’s first five games. She has a .615 batting average.
Cortez and Kenadi Granadino accounted for the other M-S hits in Game 2. Granadino had an RBI. Akers and Chloe Truax scored runs.
Akers pitched all 6 1/3 innings. She permitted five hits and one earned run while walking two batters and striking out seven.
M-S (4-1) returns to action on Tuesday (April 5), weather permitting, at Rantoul.
